When I first fell in love with travel, as a child, I would go through my mom’s old AAA TripTiks she had collected over the years. AAA is essentially the Expedia of the pre-computer era. My parents would order these things for every vacation. The TripTik had most of the details of a trip as far as maps, lodging suggestions, attractions, etc., all in a booklet format, put together for a specific trip. This was kind of my first exposure to a travel agency. This was also a time when everyone in the business was called a travel agent. But to get all the information that AAA gathered and walk my parents through everything was more of an advisor role.

What brought this post about was seeing “travel agent” and “travel advisor” used in the same context. You see the terms ‘Travel Advisor’ and ‘Travel Agent’ used interchangeably, but is there a difference? I’m here to say that yes, in fact, there is a difference between a travel agent and a travel advisor. Here's a breakdown:

Travel Agent

A travel agent is a great resource for handling straightforward bookings that don’t require extensive customization. For example, if you’re booking a flight, hotel, and perhaps a car rental, a travel agent can efficiently handle the logistics. Their expertise shines when working with predefined packages or suppliers to secure competitive rates and deals.

• Service: Operates as a transactional service provider, often working with predefined packages or suppliers.

Travel agents are an excellent choice for travelers seeking convenience and cost-effective options for simple travel plans.

Travel Advisor

Using a travel advisor is best for travel that has multiple components–multiple legs of a flight, different lodging in different locations, tours, etc.–or needs intense research to customize a trip that is truly unique and fits the client perfectly. Travel advisors take the time to really get to know their clients and their wants and needs when it comes to travel. A travel advisor will usually sell on the experience first and price second, and often charge a fee because there is more time and expertise involved.

• Role: Offers a more personalized and consultative approach, focusing on designing custom itineraries based on a client's preferences and needs.
• Service: Goes beyond booking to provide expert advice, recommendations, and insider knowledge. They may include support before, during, and after travel.

• Expertise: Often specializes in specific destinations, niches (like adventure travel or family travel), or types of experiences.

There really is no wrong professional to work with; it just all depends on what your goal is.
