My Photography Journey
I've had a love for photography since childhood, although my early photos were often random and out of focus—but I loved capturing moments nonetheless. My passion for photography likely comes from my mom and sister. My mom, though never formally trained, had a talent for capturing candid shots of our family and the places we traveled. My sister, on the other hand, took photography classes in high school and leaned towards more artistic compositions.
I find myself somewhere in between. I enjoy taking spontaneous images, but I also like to create photos that could be used as art. My favorite subjects are modes of transportation, particularly automobiles, but I’m also drawn to trains and airplanes. Unfortunately, I don’t live near any large rivers or bodies of water, so I don’t have many opportunities to photograph watercraft. I also enjoy nature and architecture photos.
Photography and My Mental Health
Photography has been a tremendous boost for my mental health, providing an escape when I need it most. It's one of those hobbies that, when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I can turn to and lose myself in. Car shows and automotive events are my favorite places to get immersed. I often lose track of time—hours can pass in what feels like minutes—though my feet always remind me!
Sometimes, I'll come home ready to edit, thinking I took just a few hundred shots, only to find my computer uploading thousands. But after a day behind the camera, I always feel a sense of relief; the stress and anxiety I had earlier seem to melt away, at least for a while. Since I’m not shooting for income, I have the freedom to let those thousands of images sit on my hard drive until I'm ready to edit them—unless, of course, there are a few particularly interesting ones I can't wait to share.
So, my suggestion is, if you are looking for an alternative way to cope with a bad mental health situation, give photography a shot (pun intended lol). And you don’t need any expensive camera gear either, just use your phone. Go ahead and fill it up with photos by finding a subject that interests you, and keep shooting. Even if those photos don’t ever see the light of day again, take the picture. You may be surprised by what you create. You may even create an award winning image.
